Crane Data Centers Inc. (“Crane”) is seeking an Energy Lead. In this role, you will define our strategic approach to energy infrastructure and supply for Crane, and negotiate energy agreements including transmission studies, interconnection/facilities agreements, and power purchase agreements/electric service agreements (PPAs/ESAs). As Crane’s Energy Lead, you will have the opportunity to build an innovative approach to data center energy with an experienced, driven, and entrepreneurial team of experts.
Responsibilities
- Develop Crane’s strategy for energy infrastructure investments and power supply, including renewable and carbon-free energy
- Negotiate and execute power infrastructure (e.g., interconnection or facilities agreements) and supply agreements (power supply purchase and electric service agreements) for hyperscale data center campuses
- Represent Crane to external stakeholders in the energy sector, including providers and vendors
- Act as Crane’s point of contact for utility companies and government entities such as Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs), Municipal utility companies (munis), utility co-operatives, and regulators. You shall further develop and maintain your strong network of local, regional, and national contacts in support of achieving Crane’s energy, climate, and sustainability goals.
- Support Crane’s site selection team in the evaluation of prospective projects and their respective markets, including examination of grid stability, provider capability, electrical infrastructure conditions, interconnection/facility requirements and cost/schedule feasibility, as well as supply cost and grid composition
- Author and execute company best practices and processes for effective and efficient energy-related workstreams
- Develop strong cross-functional relationships and program teams to efficiently deliver on shared goals
- Develop, implement and use key performance indicators and business goals to drive corporate and team outcomes
- Manage shared resources and balance competing priorities to progress top-line business objectives
Executive Management
- You will report directly to Crane’s Chief Technical Officer
- You will work with Crane’s leadership team to develop top-line company goals and priorities, particularly related to sustainability and carbon initiatives. You will be responsible for communicating these plans to the company organizations you support, and will ensure corporate goals and objectives are reflected in energy team and group goals.
- You will provide organizational leadership and represent Crane’s development activities to Crane’s C-Suite and cross-functional development teams.
- You will maintain the highest level of professionalism and personal integrity in making decisions, and embody, demonstrate, and live out Crane’s company values.
- You will promote Crane as a thought leader in energy, sustainability, and regulation. You will execute innovative energy agreements in alignment with Crane’s sustainability and climate objectives
Minimum Qualifications
- 6 years of experience negotiating energy supply, interconnection, and facilities agreements with IOUs, munis, and cooperatives ,while supporting design / construction of power infrastructure for large-scale energy users (e.g., semiconductors, manufacturing, data centers).
- Proven track record of working with or for major power providers and regulating bodies in the United States to secure and deploy large amounts of sustainable power.
- Leadership and management of complex, large-scale programs
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Experience establishing trusted relationships and leading projects across a wide range of time zones and geographic locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity and experience building hyperscale (100+ MW) data center facilities
- Experience working for or with large-scale, enterprise data center owners, developers and operators with a deep understanding of their energy requirements.
- Understanding of major power providers’ structures and processes
- Exposure to regulating bodies in the Americas, APAC and/or EMEA (e.g. NERC, FERC, RTO)
- Experience working with renewable developers, including the purchase of renewable energy on or off PPA
- History of coaching less experienced team members to negotiate energy infrastructure and supply agreements
- A J.D, or a Master’s degree in sustainable energy, engineering, economics, business, finance or related field
- Knowledge of on-premises power generation and/or grid-scale battery backup systems
- Experience negotiating other utility agreements critical to data center operation (water, sewer) and city development agreements
- Familiarity with site development milestones, early due diligence, and ability to support early master planning and siting of electrical infrastructure (e.g., substation and transmission line placement)
Travel Requirements
Potential to travel up to 25-50% with flexibility to travel on short notice.
